The Friday Message - Issue No: 05

Salamun alaykum,

Yawmul Barakah : The day of blessing :

Jum’a means “things collected together”. In Arabic the sixth day of the week is known as yawmil-jum’a which literally means the day of congregation. Historically it is the day when the Quraysh used to gather themselves in the building called Darun Nadwa in Makka.

Friday is also known as Sayyidul-ayyaam- the master of all days. In Islam, just as Makkah is the most preferred city and holy Ramadhan is the most blessed month, Yawmul Jum’a Friday is superior to the other six days of the week. Herebelow selected ahadith on the status of Jum’a:

  • Friday (jum’a)  is the chief of all the (other) days, and its greatness with Allah is more than the day of Eidul Adha and the day of Eidul Fitr.- Holy Prophet (s.a.w.w.)
  • Friday is the best of all days of the week. Good (deeds) done on Friday earns many rewards and supplications are (also) accepted. - Holy Prophet (s.a.w.w.)
  • Present to your family members some fruits on every Friday so that they may rejoice (be delighted) on Friday.- Imam Ali bin Abitalib a.s.
  • The charity given on Friday is considered double, because of the superiority of Friday over other days.- Imam Muhammad AlBaqir a.s.

The auspiciousness of Friday can be deduced from the other names given to this day. Some of these are:

Yawmul-Ijaabah, the day of acceptance

Yawmul-Barakah, the day of blessing
Yawmul-Karaamah, the day of honor
Yawmul-Mazeed, the day of abundance
Yawmul-Eid, the day of rejoicing

Yawmul Jum’a – The day of congregation :

On this day we congregate to perform  the Prime deed for the day: Salatul Jum’a: – the Friday prayer -

‘O you who believe, when the call to prayer is made on ‘ yawmil-jum’a’ hasten to the remembrance of Allah and leave off all transactions. That is better for you, if you know (Sura Al Jum’a 62:9)

Friday is not for ‘rest’:

Allah! There is no god save He, the ever-living, the self-subsisting (by whom all subsist). Slumber does not seize Him, nor does sleep. (Sura Al Baqarah 2:255)

Unlike the belief in Sabbath being a commemoration of God ending His work of creation and resting on the day, we are enjoined to go about our activity

after salatul jum’a:

‘And when the prayer is finished, then disperse through the land and seek of the bounty of Allah and remember (celebrate praises) Allah greatly so that you may prosper. (Sura Al Jum’a 62:10)

Wa ma tawfiqi illa billah
