The Friday Message - Issue No: 35 - Chief of the Ladies of the Worlds

Salamun alaykum,

Jamadi al Thani :

Literal meaning of the words:

Jamad’ means freezing, solidifying.

‘Thani’ means the second.

Origin of the name:

Jamadi al Thani follows the month Jamadi al Ula. Whilst naming the months by the Arabs, these months occurred in the season when the water freezes. Thus Jamadi al Thani signifies the second month of freezing.

Two significant dates:

The month of Jamadi al Thani marks the occurrence of Two notable events in Islamic history related to Seyyidati Nisaa il ‘Alamin (the chief of the ladies of the worlds).

  • On Friday 20th Jamadi al thani 615 C.E., Bibi Khadijatul Kubra, the first and most beloved wife of the Messenger of Allah s.a.w.w. gave birth to Bibi Fatima  at Mecca. This was in the 5th year of Bi’thah and 8 years before Hijra.
  • After living a short life of 18 years which were full of hardship and sorrows, Bibi Fatima met martyrdom on 3rd Jamadi al Thani 11 years after Hijra.

Female infanticide:

Infanticide is the practice of intentionally killing an infant. In the Pre Islamic era, referred to as era of ignorance (Ayyamul Jahiliyyah), the birth of a baby girl was seen as disappointment. The father felt fear of social disgrace upon the birth of a daughter. Thus female infanticide, by burying alive a female newborn, was common all over Arabia during this period of time.

Abundance granted:

When Tahir, the Holy Prophet's son, born to Bibi Khadijatul Kubra, died, the Makkans led by Amr bin As and Hakam bin As taunted the Holy Prophet by calling him abtar- tail-less, i.e. one whose progeny has been cut off.

Sura Al Kawthar (Abundance) was revealed to give glad tidings to the Holy Prophet that abundance of unbounded grace, wisdom and knowledge, mercy and goodness, spiritual power and insight, in highest degrees, and of progeny has been given to him.

Most dearest:

It was against this background where birth of a baby girl was looked down that the Holy Prophet introduces his daughter as his dearest.

“O Messenger of Allah”, Imam Ali once asked the Holy Prophet, “which one from your family is dearest to you?”

The Holy Prophet replied,” Fatima, the daughter of Muhammad”

This is an exemplary type of father-child relationship for parents to emulate in their relation with their children especially their daughters.

Wa ma tawfiqi illa billah
