The Friday Message - Issue No: 33: 8-8-8 [Eight-Hour Day]

Salamun alaykum,

Numerals 8-8-8 :

A memorial statue with the numerals 8-8-8, sits on the corner of Lygon Street and Victoria Parade in Melbourne, Australia. This statue is to commemorate the victory of Stonemason's demand for an "Eight-Hour Day". The numerals  8-8-8  represents 8 hours of work, 8 hours of recreation, and 8 hours of rest.

Holiday for the working Man:

This was not achieved without general strikes and loss of lives in the movement to safeguard the rights of workers

To commemorate the victory of the fight for the eight hour day the ‘workers holiday’ was promoted. In this regard May day - the 1st of May was declared International Workers' Day or Labour Day. On this day the social and economic achievements of the workers and International Labour movement is celebrated. Commonly one sees organized street demonstrations including parades, shows and other patriotic and labour-oriented events by millions of working people throughout most of the countries of the world except for Bermuda, Canada and the United States. These countries celebrate Labour day on the first Monday of September.

Work is worship:

In Islam much importance has been attached to work and the right of the worker.

When a worker makes effort to work and earn a lawful livelihood to meet his needs and of his family he is considered to be in state of ibadah : worship.

Purest Food:

“The purest food which one eats is that which he earns by hard work” (Holy Prophet s.a.w.w.)

Whilst the worker is undergoing the deed of ibadah to earn a livelihood, Islam has safeguarded his rights. On various occasions the holy Prophet   laid emphasis to safeguard the rights of the worker. A sample of his noble guidance are :

  • Wronging the worker in his wage is a grave sin
  • Give the workers his wage before his sweat dries up, and inform him of his wage while he is still working.

Let us observe the forthcoming Labour Day /May Day with gratefulness to Allah SWT for blessing us with the good health to undertake the ibadah of work.

Wa ma tawfiqi illa billah

With salaams and duas
