Salamun alaykum,

Earth Week 7th – 15th November, 2009
Dahwul Ardh / Earth day on 25th Dhulqa’ada (14th November, 2009)

FOUR things to do on this day:

  1. Perform ghusl
  1. Highly Recommended to fast.
  1. Recite the recommended prayers for the day.
  1. Reflect on our role as Stewards / Trustees of Earth : our home

Refer to separate email dated 11th November, 2009.

Some verses from Holy Quran for reflection :

  • Inni jaa’ilun fil ardhi khalifah. Behold, your Lord said to the angels: "I am going to place a vicegerent on earth." (Sura al-Baqara 2:30) Thus purpose for creation of man is to be a Steward of  God on this earth : our home
  • And it is He Who has made you (His) agents, inheritors of the earth: He has raised you in ranks, some above others: that He may try you by what He has given you..(Sura Al-An’am 6:165)
  • Certainly We have established you on the earth, and made in it [various] means of livelihood for you. Little do you thank.” (Sura Al-A’araaf 7:10)
  • Then We made you successors in the land after them so that We may see how you act. (Sura Yunus 10:14)
  • Corruption has appeared in land and sea because of the doings of the people's hands that He may make them taste something of what they have done, so that they may come back. (Sura Ar-Rum 30:41)

How must we celebrate Dahwul Ardh?

  • One must try to "fast" the true fasting by ensuring that every member of one's body is also fasting. He should also feel the pain of hunger and think about the reason why there exists a class in the world that starves while in other parts of the world there is surplus food such that some giant economic countries have to throw food every year to maintain the value of its currency.
  • Offering prayers and Du'as recitation with sincerity and attention. These noble devotions are very vital elements to enable the human being come closer to his All-Merciful Creator.
  • Our responsibility as Stewards / Trustees of the Earth : We pray to Allah (swt) to enable us utilize this earth for the purpose it was created and we sincerely ask him to uproot the influence of the capitalistic / consumerism whose voluptuous and greedy nature is never satiated, and because of whom the earth is in great crisis.
  • To try to understand the contemporary problems of the earth and contribute whatever we can in this auspicious day.
  • Making a firm decision and resolve in utilizing this earth as a means for a good and eternally secure Hereafter.

This would really make the celebration an unforgettable occasion, a celebration of true faith and concern, and a celebration of thanking the All-Merciful Creator who created the world- our home for our own good.

How is Dahwu'l Ardh applicable in the present era ?
Internationally pollution, climate change, green house effect, depletion of ozone layer and conservation of the environment has been and is still a focus for discussion and action. Man as Khalifa/ Trustee /Steward on this earth has an obligation to protect / conserve the environment.
We should try to expand our vision, and understand the occasion well: Ponder over this God given blessing the Earth : our home .What is the earth? Why was the earth created? Do we benefit from the earth for the purpose it was created? Are we making the earth a shelter of peace, or an arena of disunity, war, and pollution? What is the remedy for these crisis?

If we try to respond to these fundamental questions and do the necessary, we would have celebrated the occasion as anticipated from us.

Salamun alaykum,

Earth Week 7th – 15th November, 2009
Dahwul Ardh / Earth day on 25th Dhulqa’ada (14th November, 2009)

What is Dahwul Ardh ?

The phrase "Dahwul Ardh" literally means "The spread of the earth".

"Dahwul Ardh" - according to a tradition of the Holy Prophet s.a.w.w. is on the 25th of Dhulqa'da. On this day Allah spread out all the land on the earth from under the Ka’aba for the advantage of human beings. In another tradition it is reported that the first Rahmah; blessing descended on this very day. This is also the day when Prophet Adam (peace be with him) was sent to Earth.

This day is also the birthday of two great Prophets, Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham), peace be with him, who is known as the Father of Monotheism as it is from him that the great Prophets came that make up the Jews, Christians and Muslims of today. In addition Prophet Isa bin Maryam ( Jesus) ,peace be with him, was born on this blessed day.

The Holy Qur’an alluding to the spread of the earth says:“…and after that He spread out the earth.” (Sura An-Nazi-at 79:30)

Earth Day :

Whereas the well-known Earth Day was officially proclaimed by the United Nations on February 26, 1971, after the idea was first brought up by peace activist John McConnell at a UNESCO Conference on the Environment in 1969 and later asserted by San Francisco Mayor Joseph Alioto on March 21, 1970;Dahwul-Ardh, Earth day, has been an occasion celebrated by muslims for more than 1400 years now.

Let us make Dahwul Ardh : The Earth day an unforgettable occasion:

Observe Dahwul Ardh in an innovative way : This year the lunar date for Dahwul Ardh will fall on 14th November I.A. Therefore the week of 7th November to 15th November is being declared as Earth week and actual day of Dahwul Ardh, (14th November) be Earth Day.

This message will be included in Majlis, Risalatul Jum’a, Salatul Jum’a khutba and the madrasah. I.A. On the actual day of Dahwul Ardh, (14th November) the Earth Day, a function wil be held at the madrasah. Events include tree planting, address and qasida. The programme will  conclude with maghribayn salah followed by iftar. ( breaking of fast).

The take home message be let us appreciate our ‘home’ the earth and practice spiritual ( taqwa) and physical conservation (water, energy, environment etc ) and that conservation is ibadah : an act of worship.

England to have first-ever 'Inter Faith Week'

On 24th March, 2009, Communities and Local Government Secretary Hazel Blears announced England's first-ever 'Inter Faith Week', will run from 15 to 21 November 2009. Its aims are:

  • to strengthen good inter faith relations at all levels
  • to increase awareness of the different and distinct faith communities in the UK, in particular celebrating and building on the contribution which their members make to their neighbourhoods and to wider society
  • to increase understanding between people of religious and non-religious belief

It is a point of interest to note that this year Dahwul Ardh falls in the Interfaith week. The Earth Ecosystem is the perfect starting block for Interfaith dialogue. Islam is the only one of the three Abrahamic religions that clearly advocates our role as stewards / trustees to Earth.

Salamun alaykum,

Birth of the Eighth Holy Imam

11th Dhulqa’ada : marks the auspicious occasion of the birth date of our eighth holy Imam Ali Ar-Ridha a.s. He was born in Medina in the year 148 A.H. He is the son of our seventh holy Imam Musa Al-Kadhim a.s. and Ummul Banin Bibi KhayzranNajma.

His grandfather Imam J’afar Al Sadiq a.s. died one month before the birth of Imam Ali Ar-Ridha a.s. Thus Imam Ali Ar-Ridha a.s. lived in the care of his father Imam Musa Al-Kadhim a.s. for almost 35 years. He imbibed from his father his knowledge, morals and good manners till the latter was taken to Baghdad to suffer the hardship of imprisonment for four years leading to his death in 183 A.H. The holy Imam was 35 years old when his father died and he assumed the office of Imamat. He led the Ummah for 20 years till the time of his martyrdom on 29th Safar,203 A.H. due to poison by the Abbasid Ruler Mamun.

The eighth holy Imam was buried in Sanabad, Toos region. After the burial of Imam Ali Ar-Ridha a.s. in this place, Sanabad soon transformed into a metropolis, later known as Toos and then Mashhad.

Ar-Ridha : The pleasure:

Ahmed al-Bizanti gave the reason for giving this name Ar-Ridha to eighth holy imam saying: "He was given the name “Ar-Ridha” because he is the good pleasure of Allah, the Most Exalted, in His heaven, the pleasure of His Messenger, and of the Imams after him on His earth.”

Narrators report that it was Imam Musa Al-Kadhim a.s. who gave this name Ar-Ridha to his son. Sulayman bin Hafs reported: "Imam Musa Al-Kadhim a.s. named his son Ali Ar-Ridha. He would say: 'Summon to me my son Ar-Ridha.

Al Hadith Al-Dhahabi : The golden narration :

Once, on his way to Khurasan, when the Imam a.s. was brought by force by the guards of al-Ma'mun from Medina, he arrived on horseback at Nayshapur. Myriads of people gathered round him and all roads were overcrowded as they had come to meet and see their great Imam. When the people saw him, and he was in that appearance resembling the appearance of Holy Prophet, they said loudly, "La Ilaha Illallah” (There is no god but Allah), and exclaimed, Allahu Akber (Allah is great!). They displayed sadness for the Imam and wept for him. Abu Dhar'ah ar-Radhi and Muhammad ibn Aslam at-Tusi, the two great scholars of the day, stepped out of the crowd and begged the Imam to halt there for a moment so that the faithful may be able to hear his voice. They also requested the Imam to address the gathering. The Imam granted the request and in his brief address told the mammoth gathering the real interpretation of La ilaha illalallah.
The Imam delivered to the scholars this holy tradition saying: "I heard my father Musa bin Ja'far say: I heard my father Ja'far bin. Muhammad say: I heard my father Muhammad bin. Ali say: I heard my father Ali bin al-Husayn say: I heard my father al-Husayn bin Ali say: I heard my father the Commander of the faithful Ali bin Abi Talib say: I heard the Prophet, s.a.w.w. say from Allah that : 'There is no god but Allah is My stronghold, so he who enters My stronghold is safe from My chastisement.'" saying: "But according to its conditions, and I am among its conditions."

Surely it can be seen from the statement of kalima, "La Ilaha Illallah” (there is no god but Allah) is one of the strongholds of Allah, saving one from Divine punishment, but according to conditions among which is professing the Imamate of Imam Ar-Ridha, who is the eighth Divinely appointed successor of holy prophet.

Heartiest Felicitations on the Happy and Auspicious Occasion of the Birth Anniversary of Imam Ali Ar-Ridha (A.S.)

Salamun alaykum,

Ash-hurul hurum: The sacred months

“Surely the number of months with Allah is twelve months so ordained by Him the day He created the heavens and the earth; of them four are sacred: that is the right reckoning; therefore be not unjust to yourselves regarding them. And fight the polytheists all together as they fight you all together; and know that Allah is with those who guard (against evil).”

Sura At-Tawba 9:36

The four sacred months (Ash-hurul hurum) mentioned in the above ayah of holy Quran are:- Dhulqa’ada, Dhulhijja, Muharram and Rajab.

The sanctity of these months was observed such that to commence fighting with the kuffar is prohibited. Sheikh Ali bin Ibrahim Al-qummi reports that during these sacred months the recompense for good deeds and punishment for bad deeds is amplified.

Dhulqa’ada : Shahrul haram :The sacred month

It is the first of the four sacred months (Ash-hurul hurum) mentioned in Holy Quran. Sayyid Ibn Tawoos (ra) narrated in a hadith that the month of Dhulqa'ada is the realm for supplications being responded on encountering a problem.

Sheikh Mufid records in his book Hadaiqur Riyadh that the Holy prophet s.a.w.w. said : One who fasts in the sacred months on three days: Thursday, Friday and Saturday Allah (swt) writes for him the reward of worship of 900 years for fasting during the day and remaining awake in night.

Special a’mal on a Sunday in month of Dhulqa'ada: Its benefits :

It has been narrated on the authority of the Messenger of Allah s.a.w.w. that a prayer, after performing ghusl, on a Sunday in this month has numerous virtues.

Among them is that whoever prays it his repentance to Allah is accepted, and every sin he has committed since the day he was born has been forgiven, he will die in pure faith (Iman) and Allah is pleased with him on the Day of Judgment.  Also, his grave is made spacious and it is illuminated by Allah with light from Him (swt). His father shall be pleased with him and his ancestors and descendants' sins shall be forgiven. Also, his blessings shall increase and the Angel of Death will be friendly to him at time of death and his soul shall be taken from the body in a manner that is easy and fast.

This a’mal will Inshallah be performed jointly on Sunday 15th November, 2009 after Dhuhrayn jamaat prayers. Kindly note this date.

The Friday Message - Issue No: 07

Issue No: 07
15th October 2009
25th Shawwal 1430 AH

Salamun alaykum,

25th Shawwal : 148 A.H.

This day marks the sad demise of our sixth holy Imam J’afar Al Sadiq a.s. at the age  of 65 years. He was born in Medina on 17th Rabi ul Awwal, 83 A.H. He is the son of our fifth holy Imam Muhammad Al Baqir a.s. and Bibi Fatima (Um Farwa) daughter of  Al Qasim bin Muhammad bin Abi Bakr.

At the time of his birth his grandfather Imam Ali Zaynul Abidin was alive. He spent 12 years in the company of his grandfather who passed away in 95 A.H. In 114 A.H. when the Imam was 31 years old his father died and he assumed the office of Imamat. He led the Ummah for 34 years till the time of his martyrdom on  25th Shawwal,148 A.H.

He was buried in the Cemetry :- Jannatul Baqi alongside his father, grandfather and his (great-great) uncle Imam Hassan a.s.

Imam J’afar Sadiq(a.s.) stood out among the people for his great merit (fadl); he was the most celebrated, the greatest in rank and the most illustrious of them in the eyes of both the Non-Shia (al-amma) and the Shi'a (al-khassa). The learned scholars have transmitted on the authority of no other member of the Ahlul-Bayt as much as they have transmitted on his authority.

The Golden chain of narration :

Imam J’afar Sadiq (a.s.) often said, “ I heard the hadith I communicate to you from my father ( Imam Al Baqir). My father heard them from my grandfather ( Imam Zaynul Abidin). My grandfather heard them from his father (Imam Husayn). His father heard them from Ali bin Abi Talib. Ali bin Abi Talib heard them from the Apostle of Allah. And what hadith the apostle of Allah communicated are the exact words of Allah, the Almighty and most High.” This Hadith called the golden chain of narration.

J’afariya : Another name of the Shias

During the imamate of the sixth Imam greater possibilities and a more favorable climate existed for him to propagate religious teachings. This came about as a result of revolts in Islamic Lands, especially the uprising to overthrow the Umayyad caliphate, and the bloody wars which finally led to the fall and extinction of the Umayyads. The Imam took advantage of the occasion to propagate the religious sciences until the very end of his imamate. The great role of Imam J’afar Sadiq in promoting scholarship, consolidation and exposure of teachings of the message of holy prophet nurtured the body of ‘Islam original’ and made the Shia Ithna Asheri be synonymous as J’aferiya.

Need for wudhu after Ghusl? :

A person who does Ghusl of Janabat should not do Wudhu for the prayers. In fact one can offer prayers without performing Wudhu after all Wajib Ghusls (except the ghusl  for medium istihaza).

Also one can perform acts for which wudhu is necessary e.g. prayers after having taken some mustahab ghusls. These mustahab ghusls are listed in ruling No: 651 by our Marja Taqleed Ayatollah al Udhama Seyyid Seestani.Ghusl of Juma is included in the list.
