Alhamdulillah on 2nd February a delegation from Wessex Jamaat led by Sheikh FazleAbbas had a joint meeting with George Hollingberry, Member of Parliament for Meon Valley (constituency where our Al Mahdi centre is situated), at the Kings Church, High Street, Bishops Waltham Village.
This meeting was the fruit of the joint Muslim/Christian gathering we had on 29th January at the Cathedral.
There was representation from the various churches, Lay people and Young Peoples Group.
The meeting was organised in order to present the views of the Christian and Muslim communities opposition to the intended redefinition of marriage by the Government. In summary, the basic message from George to us was that the bill is based on grounds of 'equality', that 'this just is right' and that there is no right or wrong time. This is the right time to promote 'equality'. He is strong on his view to vote yes for the bill regardless of the politics, history, the facts, definition of words, the social risk and the majority of opinion without any reference to what determines 'right'.
On the whole we feel it was a good meeting to have had especially for us as Muslims to be side by side the Christian faith community even though we did not get the response we all would have liked. For Wessex Jamaat this was a 'first' on such an engagement .
