Wessex Jamaat’s visit to local school enhances learning in R.E.

PeelCommonSchool2School children from Peel Common Juniors have enjoyed an insight into the world of Islam.

On his first visit to the school in Gosport on 11th May, 2011, Sheikh Fazle Abbas Datoo shared his experiences of the faith, in support of the children's RE work linked to submission.

Guided by the Imam from the Al Mahdi Centre in Wickham, the pupils from Years 3 and 4 were given the opportunity to develop a greater understanding of the rituals and routines carried out by Muslims.

"I really enjoyed looking at the Qur'an and reading a bit aloud with the Sheikh. It was strange seeing it written in Arabic and English. The writing looked funny," said Poppy-Mae Gilsenan, aged 9.

After delivering a presentation focused on the subject of submission, Sheikh Fazle Abbas then encouraged the children to ask questions and explore the Islamic way of life.

Amy Adams, a class teacher at the school, explained the importance of welcoming visitors with first hand experience. "It was a really valuable insight for the children. Meeting Sheikh Fazle Abbas meant that they were all able to develop their own knowledge of different religions and cultures. They loved asking questions and finding out more about Islam from a true expert!"
