Salamun alaykum,
Winter Blues: A different perspective:
While many may be shivering and complaining of the cold weather and
darkness, we as Mumineen are invited to view the coming of winter through
a completely different lens. In fact, Winter is a huge n’imah- blessing-
from among the innumerable, countless blessings of Allah SWT. For those
who wish to develop spiritually, strengthening Taqwa; our relationship to
Allah SWT. Then this season is one of the most beautiful opportunities. How
can we do that?
Banish the winter doldrums: Tips continued
Following on from the two practical tips shared in the previous issue of the
Risalatul Jum’ah, I would like to offer two more suggestions to help dispel
the winter blues and draw us nearer to Allah (SWT). By doing so, we can
uplift our spiritual energy and overcome feelings of lethargy or inactivity.
(3) Reflect on the Creation of Allah (SWT):
Step outside and feel the crisp, icy air on your face. Notice the trees and
bushes stripped bare of their leaves, the silence of animals in hibernation,
and the thick grey clouds veiling the sun. Observe how the scenes around
you have completely transformed from the warmth and vibrancy of summer.
Then imagine — as winter fades — how the same trees bloom again and the
animals reawaken to life. This cycle of death and renewal is a powerful
reminder of how Allah (SWT) will resurrect the dead.
“Look then at the signs of Allah's mercy, how He revives the earth after its
death; indeed, He is the One who gives life to the dead, and He has power
over all things.” (Surah ar-Rum 30:50)
SubhanAllah! Through these signs, we are invited to reflect upon the
Oneness, Power, and Greatness of Allah (SWT) — our beloved Khaaliq
(Creator) and Rabb (Nourisher). Wouldn’t you like to earn immense thawab
by contemplating His magnificent creation?
This season is an opportunity to devotedly worship Allah SWT when He has
made it so easy for us so that when circumstances become difficult, we
would have become resilient in our faith.
(4) Caring for the Needy:
Alhamdulillah, many of us are blessed with warm homes, heating, food, and
clothing to stay comfortable during winter. Yet, countless others around the
world endure harsh cold, hunger, and displacement due to poverty, war, or
homelessness. Even in our own communities, we see rising numbers of
people visiting food banks and shelters.
So let us follow the shining example of the Ahlul Bayt (a.s.) by extending our
hands in compassion. How? Through sadaqah — by volunteering our time,
donating warm clothing or blankets, distributing food, or supporting local
winter relief initiatives. Involve your family, especially the children, so they
too may learn the joy and blessing of helping others in need.
Therefore dear Mumineen, let us take full advantage of the abundant
blessings that Allah (SWT) has granted us through the changing of the
seasons. If we cannot strengthen our devotion and service to Him when He
has made the conditions so gentle and full of ease, how will we manage
when circumstances become more challenging?
So, let us dispel the winter blues. Winter is springtime for the believers. Let
us revive our spiritual hearts and renew our connection with Allah (SWT) in
this season. Take the first step and Allah (SWT)will surely make the rest of
the path easy to serve Him.
Keep warm, stay grateful, and embrace the countless virtues and
opportunities that winter brings. Enjoy the virtues of winter.
Wa ma tawfiqi illa billah.
With salaams and duas,
