How has the life of Imam Hussain (as) inspired me?

Since I was born, I have seen my parents celebrating and commemorating the birth and martyrdom of the holy figures in Islam. One of those figures who are highly renowned is Imam Hussain (as). Imam Hussain's (as) life has inspired many people around the world. His martyrdom has brought together millions of people around the world together to mourn for him and for the death of his loved ones, and for the tragedy that took place on the 10th of Muharram, Ashura Day, in Karbala.

The life of Imam Hussain (as) has inspired me in many different ways. Since from a very young age, I have been brought up with the knowledge of this Imam (as), by regularly attending our mosque and also our madrasah. In the mosque and madrasah, we have been taught about the great sacrifice of our great Imam (as).

From my childhood days, I was encouraged by my parents to listen to and recite poems, eulogies, latmiyats and nasheeds in the mosque about the life and the tragedy of Imam Hussain (as). By reciting these poems, I have come to understand his life more and have realised his qualities and his personality and also that of his family's.

Another way that I have been inspired by Imam Hussain's (as) life is by taking part in the mourning for him and his family throughout the months of Muharram and Safar. I have learnt in the mosque from the religious scholars and speakers that it is in these months in which Imam Hussain (as) and his holy family had sacrificed their entire lives for the sake of Islam. They had given up everything they had and were denied water for 3 days. This has made me understand what the holy family of Imam Hussain (as) have gone through and it has also made me more interested and intrigued in finding out more about him and to one day be able to pay my respects to him.

One of the most inspirational journeys of my life was being blessed with the opportunity from Allah to be able to visit the Holy shrines of Imam Hussain (as) and his family in the holy cities of Karbala, Najaf and Samarra. It was a very moving and emotional experience to have visited the land where this great tragedy took place. I was able to visit their holy shrines and was able to pay my respects to them by reciting the poems, ziyarats and matams in close proximity to the shrines. It was an amazing experience and Inshallah by the grace of Allah, I will be able to visit the holy shrines again soon. The journey to Karbala has moved me closer to the Ahlulbayt and has inspired me to understand the life and sacrifice of our great Imam and his family.
