Salamun alaykum,

What’s happening?

Bad smell given out from mouth, a heaviness in tongue is felt, urine is dark in colour and stinking, loss of weight….

These are typical reactions taking place in the body of a person who is fasting. This is a way that the body is informing us that the inner cleansing of the body organs is going on.

The teachings of Islam address not only the spiritual needs of man, but also to the physical and sociological aspects of his life. An example is the obligation of fasting. Not only does it lead towards attaining taqwa, it also ensures good health of one’s body.

The holy prophet has said, “Fast to be healthy”

Fasting : a key to good health:

After eating the body requires a lot of energy to digest food. When in the state of fasting the Digestive system is given rest. The energy is redirected away from the Digestive system to the Immune system of the body.

  • As food is no longer entering the body, the body turns to its own resources to produce the energy it needs for its functions. It utilizes the accumulated fat reserves for energy. As one continues to observe fasting the fats stored in the body are utilized resulting into weight loss. This contributes towards improvement of one’s health condition.
  • When the fat reserves are used for energy during a fast, the chemicals from the fatty acids are released into the system. These toxins are neutralized or eliminated from the body. Diseased cells, dead cells, thickened coating of mucus on the intestinal wall, waste from - blood stream, liver, spleen, and kidney make an exit from the body. Toxic matter that has built up over time in the body is being flushed out. Detoxification is taking place.
  • During a fast, the body is on a ‘conserve energy’ and ‘healing’ mode.

“Fasting is simply a process of deep physiological rest. This rest period helps you rebuild functioning power and recover from the energy dissipation caused by hectic daily schedules and abusive living habits.”
