Statement on New Zealand Terror Attack

15 March 2019

On this Friday, a day usually dedicated to congregation and togetherness, we are deeply aggrieved by the news of the appalling shootings in Christchurch, New Zealand. The World Federation of KSIMC and its members, The Federation of Khoja Shia Ithna Asheri Jamaats of Africa, The Council of European Jamaats, Federation of Australasian Communities, India Federation, Organization of North American Shia Ithna-asheri Muslim Communities and The Federation of Khoja Shia Isna Asheri Jamaats of Pakistan, condemn this act of barbarity in the strongest possible terms and we offer our sincere condolences to the families of those murdered. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of those affected at this tragic time, and pray for the speedy recovery of those who have been injured.

We welcome the condemnations of this terrorist attack by the Prime Ministers of New Zealand, Australia and the United Kingdom as well as other world leaders.

Let us be clear that Islamophobia is terrorism; there is no place in our world for any extremist ideology, be it Muslim or non-Muslim and we stand firm on this to propagate the principles of humanity and respect for human life as affirmed by the Holy Quran that “whoever kills a soul…it is as though he had killed all of mankind, and whoever saves a life is as though he had saved all of mankind…” [5:32]
