Message of condolence: Father Jacques Hamel

Bishop Philip Egan

Portsmouth Catholic Diocese

My dear Bishop Philip,

Salamun alaykum / Greetings of peace

I am shocked and horrified to learn of the attack on worshippers in Saint –Etienne-du-Rouvray, Rouen, and the assassination of Father Jacques Hamel.

The fact that this appalling incident occurred in a sacred place devoted to God and at a time when the faithful were praying to God profoundly affects us all.

On behalf of the congregation at Al Mahdi Centre and the local Muslim Community I extend our deepest condolences to the parishioners of the church Saint –Etienne-du-Rouvray, Portsmouth Catholic Diocese and the Roman Catholic Church.

We also extend our sympathies to his holiness Pope Francis.

We strongly condemn this evil and barbaric act of terror committed against innocent people engaged in serving the Almighty God in a house of worship.

May Almighty God receive Father Jacques Harmel with abundant Mercy and grant him eternal rest. We pray for the injured to make a full and swift recovery.

In these challenging moments it is urgent now, as they were, to continue promoting interfaith understanding and building relationships amongst our communities.

Once again I express our deep sorrow and extend our assurances of prayer to you; our compatriots in faith.

Wishing you and members of your congregation the choicest Divine Blessings as we seek to live and work to glorify Almighty God.

With my prayers and kind regards,

Fazle Abbas Datoo
