Majlis Summary

Appointed days: Days of virtue and righteous deeds

Remember/Celebrate the praise of Allah during the appointed days.(Sura al-Baqara 2:203)

Festival of Sacrifice /Eid Ul Adhha:

On the 9th day of Dhulhijjah the pilgrims will be undertaking the wuquf (stay) at the plains of Arafat. Thereafter, following the footsteps of Nabi Ibrahim a.s; on the 10th day of Dhulhijjah, the stoning of the Jamarat (shaytan pillars) and Adh-hiya will be performed. Adh-hiya or Qurbani is the slaughtering of the animal. This 10th day is rightly known as the Eid Ul Adhha (Festival of Sacrifice), and is referred to as such in all the religious texts. Commonly it is also referred to as qurbani eid or bakri eid (goat eid). For some time now the event has been incorrectly called as Eid ul Hajj. Let us be wary of utilizing this wrong name being advocated by foreign nation who do not base their calendar on the sighting of the crescent.

Laylatu Arafa: Night of great excellence :

The night of 9th Dhulhijjah is a great auspicious night for pleading to Allah SWT.
“On night of Arafa, the duas are accepted, one who acts in obedience to Allah will be rewarded deeds of 170 years; it is the night of munajat (conversation) with Allah in which He grants tawba to the repentant ones.” (Holy Prophet s.a.w.w.)
Recommended to recite various duas and Ziyarah of Imam Husayn a.s.

Yawmul Arafa: 9th Dhulhijjah:

This day is highly recommended for seeking ones pleas from Allah SWT.
It is reported that that on the day of Arafa, Imam Zaynul Abidin a.s. heard the voice of a beggar asking from the people. He turned to the beggar and said,” Shame on you! Are you begging from other than Allah on this day? Even for the baby in the mothers womb, there is the hope that Allah’s mercy is with him and that he will become virtuous.”
Imam J’afar Sadiq explains that on closing hours of this day Allah SWT informs His angels to bear witness that He is obliged to respond to the duas of the good doers, accept their deeds and forgive them.
Recommended to perform ghusl, recite various amals/duas and Ziyarah of Imam Husayn a.s.

Greetings from Holy Prophet :

Jabir bin Abdulah Al-Ansari, a renowned companion of the holy prophet now old in age and blind in eyesight is seated in masjidun nabi and keeps on asking for AlBaqir. One day a young lad around 5 years presents himself to Jabir and after greetings identifies himself as Muhammad bin Ali bin Husayn. Jabir takes the hand of the young man, kisses it and says:  Rasulallah –the messenger of Allah sends his greetings to you.
Jabir explained that Rasulallah had informed him that,” you would live long enough to see a descendant of mine, called Muhammad bin Ali bin Husayn. He will certainly be Baqir (one who is deeply knowledgeable, sharply wise and cuts deep through the science of religion).  Convey my salams to him”.

5th  Imam Muhammad Al-Baqir :

He was born on 1st Rajab 57 A.H. in Medina. His parents are the 4th Imam Ali Zaynul ‘Abidin a.s. and Bibi Fatima bint Hasan. This is a unique lineage as both his paternal grandfather (Imam Husayn) and maternal grandfather ( Imam Hasan) are Imams.
He spent the early years under his grandfather Imam Husayn a.s. At a young age together with his father Imam Ali Zaynul ‘Abidin he was present in Karbala on Ashura 61 A.H. and was a witness to all the massacre carried out. He was included in the caravan of prisoners to Kufa and Sham.

In 95 A.H. when 5th Imam Muhammad Al-Baqir was around 38 years old, his father the 4th Imam was martyred. Thus Imam MuhammadTaki takes the reins of Imamat and rightfully leads the ummah for 19 years. It was during his Imamate that the Ummayyah empire was on the downfall with the Abbaside taking their place. Thus Imam had ample time to continue the institution of education set up by his father through expounding on Islamic sciences such that more than 300 scholars graduated. A major revolution of knowledge started taking place with the recording of numerous traditions and texts. In addition he promoted the setting up of majlis to recall the event of Ashura.

Imam guides on monetary system :

The Byzantine emperor was making it difficult for the muslims to trade threatening to withdraw the dominant Byzantine currency. Umayyad Ruler Abdul Malik bin Marwan summons Imam to Damascus for advice. The Imam responds : “Absolutely essential for the muslims to be fully and permanently independent monetarily, to cut off and severe dealings with the Byzantine currency, mint new coins inscribed La ilaha illallah on one side and Muhammadur rasululllah on other side, stamp the edge of the coins with the date and locality and to have special scales to weigh the gold currency to make sure its accurate worth.”

Umar bin Abdul Aziz influenced by guidance of Imam :

Umar bin Abdul Aziz, one of the final Umayyad rulers who was in power for 2 years, used to receive constant counsels and letters from the Imam. These had great influence upon him. He proceeded to restore the rights of Ahlul Bayt as below :

  • L’anat /cursing is stopped: The custom introduced by Muawiyah whereby  the Jum’a and Eid khutba  included curse on 1st Imam was stopped and replaced with recitation of the verse:- Surely Allah enjoins the doing of justice and the doing of good (to others) and the giving to the kindred, and He forbids indecency and evil and rebellion; He admonishes you that you may be mindful.(Sura An Nahl 16:90)
  •  Fadak the propert of Bibi Fatima a.s. is returned to its rightful owner through the 5th Imam.

Out of fear of the influence of Imam on the Ummah the ruler Hisham bin Abdul Malik undertakes several attempts  to humiliate the Imam including arresting him and summoning him to Sham. Finally the Imam submits to martyrdom by poison on 7th Dhulhijjah 114 A.H. at age of 57 years. He is buried in Jannnatul Baqi, Madina.
