Imam-Hassan-MartydomMajlis Summary

After the wafat of Imam Ali on 21st Ramadhan 40 A.H., Imam Hasan discharged the responsibility of Imamat to the Ummah for 11 years till his martyrdom on 7th Safar 50 A.H.

Objective: In this majlis excerpts from a critical address by Imam Hasan is presented. The purpose is not to render an account from the pages of history. Rather it is to ask you to relate the historical situation to our contemporary times and reflect what would be one’s reaction were it to be the Imam Az Zaman to address us today, just as was done then by Imam Hasan.A.S.?

Imam Hasan addresses the ummah:

On the morning of 21st Ramadhan 40 A.H. Imam Hasan accompanied by a group of devotees proceeded to the mosque of Kufa and addressed the people. After glorification and thanksgiving to Almighty he mentioned some of the merits of Amiral Muminin. Tears overcame him and he wept. Sadness and sorrow prevailed. Then the Imam continued. He explained to the people his lofty status,” as the grandson of the prophet, son the executor of the prophet…one belonging to the family upon whom the angel Jibrail frequented, one who belongs to the family referred as the purified Ahlul Bayt….and the one from the house whom Allah has imposed mawaddah – love affection - upon the believers; quoting the verse : ‘Say: I do not ask you for any reward for it save the mawaddah – love affection - of my near ones...’ (Sura AshShura 42:23)

After Imam completes his address three groups of people can be identified:

  • People who devotedly rushed forward responding that none is more beloved or has any right to succession than him.
  • People who did not attend or did not want to have anything to do with the Imam Hasan as khalif.
  • People who went to pay allegiance and the Imam turned towards them saying, “when you pledge allegiance to me, you should listen to me, obey me, fight against whomever I fight and make peace with whomever I make peace with…”

What happened? The third group : When they heard the conditions set by the Imam, they refrained from paying allegiance to him.

What ingredient was missing from the hearts of the people in the last two groups?

It was the lack of mawaddah; acting upon the verse?
Such an essential ingredient is mawaddah, that numerous hadith narrate that a person will not be able to move a step on the day of judgement before being questioned on the love to Ahlul Bayt.

What is expected from those who have this critical ingredient?

“…you should listen to me, obey me, fight against whomever I fight and make peace with whomever I make peace with…” Imam Hasan al Mujtaba.

Reflect: In our contemporary times of our Imam Sahibaz Zaman – Master of our age:
Does one need to be reminded of the Imam being the representative of Divine authority and direct link to Rasulallah, thus deserving total devotion?
How deep is the mawaddah such that one will sincerely respond the Imam?
How does one see oneself in pledging allegiance to Imam Sahibaz Zaman and in extension to the leadership of the marja?
Is one listening and acting upon the words: “when you pledge allegiance to me, you should listen to me, obey me, fight against whomever I fight and make peace with whomever I make peace with…”

Imam Hasan is martyred:

Muawiya communicated secretly with Ju'da, daughter of al-Ash'ath b. Qays - the wife of Imam Hasan - urging her to poison him. So severe was the effect of the poison. Imam sai,”…I have been given poison to drink several times, but I have never been given poison like this. A bit of my liver has come out of my mouth and I began to turn it over with a stick I had…”
He lived a life of 48 years till 7th Safar 50 A.H. having discharged the responsibility of Imamat to the Ummah for 11 years.

Condolences to Imam Sahibaz Zaman and the Ahlul Bayt on the martyrdom of Imam Hasan Al Mujtaba bin Ali bin Abi Talib a.s.
