QSC Session 1 | 28th March 2014

This was alhamdulillah well attendend and part of the opening session was an introduction setting the ground rules drawn up in consultation with the attendees and what to expect from future QSC sessions....

Salamun alaykum,

We had our first Quran Study Circle (QSC) session on Friday 28 March conducted by Shaykh FazleAbbas.  This was alhamdulillah well attendend and part of the opening session was an introduction setting the ground rules drawn up in consultation with the attendees and what to expect from future QSC sessions.

Please find below for your reference the ground rules and a summary of the brief discussions:

A. GROUND RULES

  • Respecting all
  • Active listening
  • Timekeeping
  • Questions to be relevant to the theme for discussion
  • Being non judgemental
  • Contributions to be with supporting sources of Qur’an or hadith
  • Active participation by all in the discussions
  • Advance preparations for the discussion

B. Ice Breaker: What is your expectation of the Qur’an Study Circle?

C. Group discussion: What do you see the Qur’an as?

D. Key concepts:

  • Ulumul Qur’an : Information about the Qur’an
  • Tafseer ul Qur’an: Information derived from the Qur’an
  • Tadabburul Qur’an: Reflecting on the Qur’an

E. Does everyone have the competence /capability of undertaking tafseer?  14 conditions have been enumerated for the correct tafseer of Qur’an

F. Caution:

  • “Those who interpret My words with their own opinion do not believe in Me.” Allah SWT
  • “The worst thing I fear for my community after me is for someone to interpret the Qur’an wrongfully.” Noble Prophet Muhammad SAWW

G. Next session:

  • Homework: Is there need for tafseer? Should tafseer continue being done? If yes, why?
  • Read on Sura Al Kawthar.
