NAAMA-E-A’MAAL (SCROLL OF DEEDS) – CON’T

PEOPLE OF THE BACK

“Then as for him who is given his record in his right hand, he shall soon have an easy reckoning, and he will return to his folks joyfully. But as for him who is given his record from his back, he will pray for annihilation (death) and he will enter the blaze”. (82:7-12)

The second group is of those who will be given the book MIN WARAA-A DHAHRIHI “from their back”.  These are the wretched people in the sight of Allah (SWT).

If the virtuous will get their records in their right hands then it only makes sense that the wretched are given in their left hands. What does Allah (SWT) mean by MIN WARAA-A DHAHRIHI “from their back”? In answer to this question, there are two things we should know:

One is that Allah (SWT) has also called this category of people as AS-HAABUL-MASH-AMAH meaning “people of the left hand” in Suratul-Waqi’ah (56).

Secondly, Allah (SWT) has said that ‘they shall be given their records from their back’, this, according to Ayatullah Naser Makarem in his ‘Payaam-e-Quran’ could imply one of the following three things:

1.      When they are given their scroll of deeds, they will immediately hide it at the back out of embarrassment that others should not know their predicament.

2.      Or their hands will be tied at the back. Just as they kept the Book of Allah behind them in life, this day they will receive their scroll of deeds from the back.

3.      Or their heads will be twisted behind and in order to see their scroll of deeds, they will extend their left hands towards the back.

When these people receive their Naama-e-A’maal, they will wish for their annihilation (death) and they will be sent into the blazing fire. In another place of the Holy Quran, a much more account of their reaction has been mentioned: “But as for him who is given his book in his left hand, he will say, ‘I wish I had not been given my book. Nor had I ever known what my account is. I wish death would have been the end of it all!’”. (69:25-27)

Many at times in this life, when we do something wrong and then we are asked about it, our immediate reaction is to become defensive and deny any wrong doing from our side. It is very common to hear from the guilty that: “No! I did not say or do this!” Some people are quite manipulative. While they will agree having said or done something, but they will insist that it was wrongly perceived. It is mentioned in Quran and in the traditions that similar will be the case of the wretched people who had disbelieved in Allah (SWT) and His message; rejected the guides who were sent to them and had spent their lives in disobedience of Allah (SWT). When they shall be given their scroll of deeds and they shall see the record of their evil deeds, their initial reaction will be to refuse the scroll of deeds.

Imam Ja’ffar as-Sadiq (as) has said that such people shall say: “O Allah! The deeds and actions written in these scrolls are surely not ours”. At that time, Allah (SWT) will bring forth the Angels who write the scroll of deeds to testify. But these people shall say: “O Allah! Verily these are Your own Angels and will testify in Your favour. The reality is that we did not commit these acts”. And they will swear upon it. (Manazil al-Aakhirah)

The Holy Quran states: “The day when Allah will raise them all together, they will swear to Him, just like they swear to you now. They will suppose that they stand on something. Look! They are indeed liars! (58:18)

When their shamelessness reaches this stage, their tongues shall be sealed and their bodily parts will scream and testify against them. “Today We shall seal their mouths, and their hands shall speak to us and their feet will bear witness concerning what they used to earn”. When this will happen, the wretched people will ask their bodily parts as to why they had testified against them. “And they shall say to their bodily components: ‘Why did you testify against us?’ They will say: ‘We were given speech by Allah who gave speech to all things’”. (41:2) Thus these people will become speechless.
