QIYAMAH
THE JUDGEMENT DAY

No. 24

AL-MEEZAN –CON’T

The other thing, which will also be beneficial at the time when our deeds are weighed, is: HUSNUL-KHULQ meaning ‘Good Character’. The Holy Prophet (saww) has said, “One of the first things that will be put in the Meezan –weighing scale – of a servant on the Day of Qiyamah shall be his good character”. (Bihar al-Anwaar) He (saww) has also said, “There is nothing that will cause the Meezan to weigh heavy more than a good character”. (Bihar al-Anwaar)

Islam teaches us to possess good Akhlaaq. Infact, the crust or the essence of Islam’s message to mankind is to perfect their characters. The Holy Prophet (saww) has said, “I have actually been sent to lead the characters of people to the height of perfection”. (Kanzul-‘Ummaal) A person came to the Holy Prophet (saww) and asked, “O Messenger of Allah! What is Religion?” He (saww) said, “Good character”. Then the man came from the right hand side and asked, “What is Religion?” He (saww) said, “Good Character”. Then again the man came from the left hand side and asked the same question, “What is Religion?” Again the Prophet (saww) replied, “Good Character”. Finally, when the man came from the back and repeated his question, “What is Religion?” The Holy Prophet (saww) turned towards him and said, “Don’t you understand Religion? Religion is never to get angry and furious”. (Bihar al-Anwaar)

ONE ASPECT OF GOOD AKHLAAQ

There are so many things related to Akhlaaq. But when we look at the definition of MAKAARIMUL-AKHLAAQ meaning ‘the highest noble traits’ – it is mainly in reference to: Controlling anger and the urge to take revenge on others. As weak human beings, many of us are quite vulnerable to anger and seeking of revenge. If somebody says or does something wrong to us, we are quick in plotting ways of getting back at him or her. Such and such had said this to me; wait till I get back at him! Such and such did this to me; wait till I give him the taste of his own medicine!

Prophet Yusuf (as). He was extremely handsome and was chosen to inherit the prophethood from his father Prophet Ya’qoob (as). When his brothers found this out, they took him out one day and threw him inside a well. He (as) was rescued from the well and later sold as a slave for only 20 dirhams. Eventually, when Prophet Yusuf (as) became the king of Egypt, he (as) showed mercy towards his brothers who had recognised him. Instead of seeking revenge, he (as) invited his brothers to come along with their father, Prophet Ya’qoob (as). The brothers felt ashamed of themselves and said, “Whenever you invite us to your banquet every morning and evening, we feel ashamed about what we did to you”. Prophet Yusuf (as) told them, “Infact I am indebted to you for restoring my prestige and honour today. Until now, people considered me as a lucky slave who was purchased with 20 dirhams and then became a king. Today they have realised that I am not a slave but your brother and one of the sons of Prophet Ya’qoob (as) – a descendant of Prophet Ibrahim (as)”. (Manazil al-Aakhirah) It is also narrated that when Prophet Ya’qoob (as) met his son Prophet Yusuf (as) and asked him as to what had befallen upon him, Prophet Yusuf (as) did not talk ill about his brothers. Instead, he (as) said, “O Father! Do not ask me what my brothers did to me, but ask me what favour my Lord did to me”. (Manazil al-Aakhirah)

The Holy Prophet (saww) has said, “You must build in yourselves the exalted noble traits, for verily Allah has sent me with them”. Then the Holy Prophet (saww) mentioned some of the very important noble traits. He (saww) said, “And verily among the exalted noble traits are four things:  A person should forgive him who oppressed him; Give helping hand to one who had denied him: Keep relation with him who severed his ties with him and visit one in his sickness who did not visit him. (Bihar al-Anwaar)

This was the Akhlaaq of all the previous prophets and the fourteen infallibles; and indeed this is the Akhlaaq of Godwary people in this world.
