QIYAMAH
THE JUDGEMENT DAY

No. 1

Belief in QIYAMAH – ‘the Judgement Day’ is part of ‘Usool al-Deen’ (The roots of religion) and whoever denies it, cannot be a Muslim. So belief in QIYAMAH is therefore essential!

“And none denies it except every sinful transgressor”. (83:12)

In the following verses, Allah (SWT) is actually telling His prophet (saww) how people, who belie Qiyamah will be dealt with on that Day.

“They say: There is nothing but our life of this world, and we shall not be resurrected. When they shall be stationed before their Lord, you shall see that your Lord will ask: ‘Is this not the truth?’ “They shall say: ‘Yes, by our Lord’. He will say: ‘So taste the punishment because of what you used to disbelieve’.” (6:29-30)

THE DIFFERENT NAMES OF THE JUDGEMENT DAY

There are several names given for the Judgement Day in the Holy Quran. Some of them are as follows:

Yaumud-Deen, which means ‘The Day of Retribution’. “(He is) the Master of the Day of Retribution”. (1:4)

Yaumul-Jama’ (The Day of Gathering)  “The Day when He will gather you for the Day of Gathering”. (64:9)

Yaumut-Taghaabun (The Day of Dispossession). “That will be a day of dispossession”. (64:9)

Yaumul-Majmoo’ (The Day when mankind will be gathered). “That is a day on which all mankind will be gathered”. (11:103)

Yaumul-Mash-hood (The Witnessed Day). “And it is a day witnessed (by all creatures)”. (11:103)

Yaumul-Ba’th (The day of Resurrection). “This is the Day of Resurrection but you did not know”. (30:56)

Yaumul-Fasl (The day of separation between good and evil). “And what will make you know what the Day of Separation is? Woe on that day to the beliers!” (77:14-15)

Yaumul-Hisaab (The Day of Accountability / Reckoning). “Indeed those who stray from the way of Allah – there is a severe punishment for them because of their forgetting the Day of Reckoning”. (38:26)

Yaumut-Talaaq (The Day of Encounter). “Raiser of ranks, Lord of the Throne, He casts the Spirit of His command upon whomever He wishes that he may warn (people) of the Day of Encounter”. (40:15)

Yaumut-Tanaad (The Day of mutual calling). “O my people! Indeed I fear for you a day of mutual distress calls”. (40:32)

Yaumul-Mau’ood (The Promised Day). “By the Promised Day”. (85:2)

Yaumus-Sa’ah (The Day of the (mentioned) Hour). “And indeed the our is bound to come”. (15:85)

However, the most common name is QIYAMAH. The term QIYAMAH in Arabic has its root from the term QAAMA, which means ‘to rise’ or ‘to stand’. It is reported from ‘Abdullah bin Yazeed bin Salaam that he once asked the Holy Prophet (saww): “Tell me about QIYAMAH as to why it has been named QIYAMAH?” The Holy Prophet (saww) said, “Because on that day the creatures will rise to give account (of their deeds)”.
