QIYAMAH

THE JUDGEMENT DAY

Al-Meezan is in reference to a ‘weighing scale of deeds’, and there are different verses in the Holy Quran about this. Let us look at some of those verses.

“The weighing (of deeds) on that Day is a truth. As for those whose deeds weigh heavy in the scales, it is they who are felicitous. As for those whose deeds weigh light in the scales, it is they who have ruined their souls”. (7:8-9)

“As for him whose deeds weigh heavy in the scales, he will have a pleasing life. As for him whose deeds weigh light in the scales, his home will be the Abyss. And what will show you what it is? It is a scorching fire!” (101:6-11)

In this life, different things are used to weigh or measure different things. For instance: A Barometer is used to measure atmospheric pressure; A Thermometer is used to measure temperature; A Bathroom scale is used to check on physical weight; A Weighing scale is used to check on weight of one thing against another. On the Day of Judgement, our deeds will also put on a scale. If good deeds outweigh the bad, then we shall be in bliss otherwise there shall be problems. The question that arises here is, what is this weighing scale and how will our deeds be weighed on the Day of Judgement?

Many Mufassireen believe that the weighing scale on the Day of Qiyamah will be similar to the one which we see in this life- the one which checks on weight of one thing against another. However, the weighing scale of the Hereafter shall be much bigger than what we perceive in this life. Some say that every man will have his own weighing scale; some say that every nation will have its weighing scale and some say that every deed shall have its scale. Whatever the case, Ayatullah Naser Makarem in his ‘Payaam-e-Quran’, Ayatullah Dasti Ghayb in ‘Ma’ad’, and Shaykh Abbas Al-Qummi in his ‘Manazil al-Aakhirah’ have all written that our deeds will be weighed with the weight of the deeds of the Prophets, and the fourteen infallibles.

A person once asked Imam Ja’ffar as-Sadiq (as) to explain the meaning of Mawazeen (meaning scales) in the Holy Quran. Imam (as) said: “They are the Prophets and their successors”. (Usool al-Kaafi) It is also mentioned in Hadith: “Indeed Ameer al-Mumineen and the Imams from his progeny are the scales – of deeds”. (Bihar al-Anwaar) In one of the Ziyaaraat of Imam Ali (as), we recite: AS-SALAAMU ‘ALAYKA YAA MEEZAANAL-A’MAAL meaning “Peace be on you O you, who is the scale of deeds”.

The conclusion is that on the Day of Qiyamah, our deeds will be weighed with the deeds of the Prophets and their successors who were sent to us as our guides so that we can emulate them.

At any point, should any of our deed differs with theirs and resembles that of their enemies then we shall be disqualified.
