Bahlul was originally known as Wahab bin Umru and he came from Kufa. He was a student of our 6th Imam and feined insanity so he could do tableegh without being prosecuted in the time of Harun Rashid. The following anecdote demonstrates the necessity for sincereity of niyyah when constributing in the Masjid.
Bahlul once saw some people constructing a large building. On enquiring, he was told by the owener of that land that he was building a Masjid. "Who are you building it for" Bahlul Asked. "For the Sake of Allah of Course"
That night, when all had left, Bahlul put a big sign on the wall saying 'Masjid-e-Bahlul.' The next morning, when the owner saw the sign on the wall, he was furious and shouted "Balul, why did you that?"
He replied "If you are building the masjid for Allah, it shouldn't bother you what name is put on it for He whom you are building it for is the Knower of all Intentions.
